Covid vaccine logistics strategies develop alongside the vaccines themselves
The challenge of rapidly finding safe and effective vaccines to Covid-19 has been spectacularly overcome as various vaccination strategies continue to be rolled out all over the world. But as the method of developing and improving vaccines is only part of the equations governments and health organizations are facing. The logistical side of developing and delivering vaccines matters just as much.
Without the right logistical approach, vaccines can be delayed. And as we know, the longer it takes for vaccines to be delivered to the people who need them most, the more people will get sick and some will sadly die from the disease.
Different vaccines have to be distributed, delivered and stored in different ways. The new single-shot Johnson & Johnson vaccine recently approved by the FDA is easier to distribute that than the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine, for example. The Pfizer vaccine has to be stored at freezing temperatures, and that includes the transportation process as well.
The distribution procedures up to now have proven a huge success. But as the needs of delivery change due to the many different vaccines that are now being deployed, it’s vital that Covid-19 vaccine logistics procedures are able to adapt, scale and level up as and when they need to.
The aim of everyone involved here is to get life back to normal at the earliest opportunity. In order for that to happen, the development of logistical and transportation systems and chains needs to happen at the same rate at which the scientific world has been able to create these vital vaccines.
